What Is LASIK?

Laser-Assisted in-situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) is a type of advanced refractive laser eye procedure for correcting near-sightedness, far-sightedness and astigmatisms, potentially reducing the patients' dependency on glasses and contact lenses. LASIK laser eye surgery is FDA-approved and becoming increasingly popular over PRK due to a quicker recovery period.

LASIK surgery can reshape the surface of your eye, specifically reshaping the cornea to reduce or eliminate nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. This procedure enables most patients to see, drive, work, swim, play sports, or even just see the alarm clock in the morning WITHOUT the need for contact lenses or glasses!

During the operation, a thin flap is created and folded back. This flap allows the laser to reach the cornea and reshape it as needed to alter your vision. Once completed, the flap is folded back into place and allowed to heal. LASIK does not require any stitches or sutures, thereby decreasing recovery time. Dr. Mutyala performs LASIK surgery on an outpatient basis with the use of anesthetic drops. Most patients return to normal activities within one day of their LASIK eye surgery.
